How does Arlington's fall leaf collection work?

Arlington County runs vacuum leaf collection in November and December, with two passes per neighborhood. Rake leaves to the curb, not into the street, and watch for the yellow signs.

If you own a home in Arlington, leaves are part of fall. Here is what the county says.

The Mike Webb Team (Mike and Claudia Webb, RE/MAX Allegiance) helps homeowners in Arlington, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC get their homes ready to sell and sold.

What are the basics?

According to the Arlington County leaf collection page:

  • Vacuum collection runs November to December, with two passes per civic association.

  • Yellow neighborhood signs go up three to seven days before each pass. The sign date is the start of the collection window.

  • Rake leaves to the curb the weekend before the start. Do not block the road with leaves more than seven days ahead.

  • Keep piles away from storm drains, water meter covers, low wires, and parked cars.

  • Remove stones, litter, and branches. Do not use plastic bags or trash carts for the vacuum pass.

  • Leaf bags and green carts are collected year-round on your regular day. Use paper bags, not plastic.

The county posts the full 2026 schedule on that page. We have not listed dates here because they depend on weather and can change. Please check the county page.

What if my street is missed?

Report a missed or partial pickup using the county's online form, or call the Customer Contact Center at 703-228-5000, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Does this matter if I am selling?

Yes. A yard covered in leaves hides the walk and the lawn in photos. If your listing photos are being taken in the fall, clear the leaves first. Our fall curb appeal checklist has more.
