Cold Weather Is Coming. How Can I Donate Coats and Warm Clothes in Arlington?
Where can I donate winter coats in Arlington?
Wash and fold coats, gloves, hats, and scarves, then ask a local group what it needs and when it takes donations before you drop anything off. Needs and drop-off times change from season to season.
The first cold nights are close. A coat you no longer wear can keep a neighbor warm. Here is how to give so it helps.
The Mike Webb Team (Mike and Claudia Webb, RE/MAX Allegiance) helps homeowners in Arlington, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC get their homes ready to sell and sold.
What do groups usually want?
Needs vary, so ask first. Groups that serve people without a home have asked for items like coats, gloves, scarves, hats, long underwear, and blankets. Ask each group what it needs this season.
Who can I ask?
We could not find a county-wide coat drive for 2026. These local groups came up in our search. Please check each group’s own website or call before you go, since our information came from older pages:
- A-SPAN, which serves people experiencing homelessness in Arlington
- The Salvation Army, which has an Arlington location
- Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington
How do I give well?
- Clean and in good shape. Give what you would be glad to wear.
- Ask what they need. The right sizes and styles help most.
- Check the drop-off hours. Do not leave items outside a closed door.
- Say no to old or damaged items. Take those to textile recycling if your area has it.
What do we do?
We have run clothing and jacket drives for shelters, and we are glad to see neighbors do the same. If your building or street wants to organize one, call us. A closet clean-out and a donation can go together.
If you are getting ready to move
Moving is a good time to sort your closets. Our post on sorting through your stuff has a simple four-pile method: keep, donate, sell, toss.
