How to Change Your Address When You Move in Virginia

How do I change my address when I move in Virginia?
Start with two official changes: the U.S. Postal Service for your mail and the Virginia DMV for your license and vehicle records. Then update your bank, your employer and your other accounts yourself.

How do I change my address with the post office?
Use the official USPS change of address page. Online, you pay a $1.25 identity verification fee with a credit card. The card's billing address must match your old or new address. USPS says to allow at least 7 to 10 business days after approval for forwarding to start.
How long does mail forwarding last?
USPS says standard forwarding lasts 12 months. You can pay to extend it. USPS also says a change of address order only changes your address with the Post Office, so you still tell your bank, your employer and other senders yourself. Items like driver's licenses and financial statements are generally not forwarded.
How do I change my address with the Virginia DMV?
The Virginia DMV says that within 30 days of moving to a new Virginia residence, you must tell DMV your new street address. A P.O. box or business address does not work. The DMV's address change page lets you update your residence, your mailing address and the address for your vehicle registration. You can also apply to register to vote or update your voter registration there.
Can I do it a different way?
Yes. The DMV's personal information updates page says online is the fastest way. You can also call (804) 497-7100, make an appointment at a customer service center, or mail an Address Change Request Form (ISD 01) to Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 27412, Richmond, VA 23269.
What if I am moving out of Virginia?
The DMV says that if you move to an address outside Virginia, it may cancel your Virginia driver's license or photo ID, with some exceptions such as active-duty military. Ask your new state about its rules.
Who else needs my new address?
Make a list: your bank and credit cards, your employer, your insurance companies, your doctor, your phone and internet companies and your subscriptions. Do it a little at a time as you pack.
