Arlington View History & Neighborhoods Nearby
Arlington View was settled in the 1880s, when a local landowning family began selling lots to Black families, many of them leaving Freedman's Village, the community the federal government set up on the Arlington estate during the Civil War. The neighborhood became home to its own school, churches and civic life.
Its best-known landmark is the Harry W. Gray House at 1005 South Quinn Street. According to Arlington County, Harry Gray was born enslaved at Arlington House. In 1880 he and his wife, Martha, bought nine acres here, and in 1881 he finished the brick house himself. The county calls it the only surviving building of its type in Arlington, an Italianate brick rowhouse. It became a local historic district in 1984 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
In 1965 the neighborhood wrote the first neighborhood plan of its kind in Arlington County. The County Board accepted an updated plan on March 17, 2026.
