Green Valley History & Neighborhoods Nearby
According to Arlington County, Green Valley is a historically Black neighborhood. After the Civil War, John D. Nauck, Jr. bought 46 acres here and divided them into lots. The neighborhood's growth was halted in 1902, when the Virginia Constitution restricted the rights of Black citizens, and by 1952 most of it was built.
Two of its landmarks are protected. Lomax African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at 2704 24th Road South was built in 1922 by its own members. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources calls it the oldest standing African American church building in Arlington, and it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004. The Green Valley Pharmacy building at 2415 Shirlington Road, built in 1942, became a county historic district in 2013.
Buyers who like Green Valley often look nearby too. Douglas Park is next door to the west, and Arlington View and Penrose are a short drive north along the Pike. Which one fits is a matter of preference.
